We are looking for a technically strong CPA who wants more than a production role.

This is an opportunity to work directly with business owners, identify meaningful tax strategies, build trusted client relationships, and help shape the future of a growing firm.

At Cook CPA Group, we believe clients deserve both exceptional technical expertise and genuine human connection. We are building a firm where accountants are trusted advisors, not simply return preparers.

If you take pride in your technical skills, enjoy solving complex problems, and want your work to have a visible impact, we’d like to meet you.

Why We Exist

Cook CPA Group has spent the last twenty years building the kind of accounting firm we would want to work with ourselves—one grounded in expertise, trust, accountability, and genuine relationships.

Our clients rely on us to solve important problems, identify opportunities, and help them make better financial decisions. We take that responsibility seriously.

We know our clients as people, not just as tax returns or financial statements. Understanding their goals, businesses, and challenges allows us to provide better advice and create better outcomes.

Many clients come to us feeling overwhelmed, behind, or uncertain about what to do next. We meet those situations with curiosity instead of criticism. Our job is not to judge people for where they are. Our job is to help them move forward.

At the same time, we believe caring about people means doing excellent work. We keep commitments, communicate proactively, continuously improve, and hold ourselves to high professional standards because trust is built through consistent action.

Why This Role Matters

As a Senior Tax Accountant, your work directly impacts the people and businesses we serve.

You will identify tax strategies that put real dollars back into clients’ pockets, help business owners make informed decisions, and provide guidance that improves financial outcomes.

You will build relationships with clients and become a trusted advisor—not simply a preparer of returns. We believe the best tax professionals combine technical expertise with sound judgment, curiosity, and the ability to understand the people behind the numbers.

This role offers significant autonomy and responsibility. We value professionals who think critically, identify opportunities, solve problems, and bring solutions forward.

Your work will be seen. Your ideas will matter. Your expertise will make a difference.

This role requires both strong execution and sound judgment. We value professionals who take ownership, think critically, and look for ways to create a better outcome for the client.

What You’ll Do

  • Prepare and review complex individual, partnership, S corporation, corporate and non-profit tax returns
  • Identify tax planning opportunities and communicate recommendations clearly
  • Work directly with business owners and non-profit leaders
  • Research and resolve complex tax issues
  • Review financial information and identify areas requiring cleanup, improvement, or additional analysis
  • Collaborate with clients, bookkeepers, and internal team members to improve outcomes
  • Contribute to process improvements and operational efficiencies
  • Mentor and support developing team members as the firm grows

What We’re Looking For

Baseline requirements

  • CPA license, or CPA candidate with at least one part of the exam passed
  • 4+ years of experience at a regional or national public accounting firm
  • Strong technical tax knowledge across individual and business returns
  • Experience reviewing and analyzing financial information
  • Ability to work in-office in Roseville
Beyond the baseline, we’re looking for someone who
  • Takes initiative and follows through without constant supervision
  • Thinks critically and exercises sound judgment
  • Communicates clearly and professionally
  • Holds themselves accountable for commitments and deadlines
  • Treats clients with respect regardless of the situation they are facing
  • Balances empathy with the ability to set expectations and hold boundaries
  • Embraces technology, automation, and continuous improvement
  • Demonstrates leadership, whether through title or behavior
  • Wants to continue growing professionally and expanding their impact
We are looking for someone who takes pride in technical excellence and is committed to continuously strengthening their tax knowledge and professional judgment.

Why This Role Is Different

Cook CPA Group is intentionally small because we believe great work happens when people have ownership, visibility, and meaningful relationships with clients and teammates.

You will work directly with clients, participate in planning discussions, contribute ideas, and gain exposure to how a firm operates and grows. The experience is broader than what many professionals encounter in highly specialized environments.

You will know the clients you serve, and they will know you. The right person will have the opportunity to influence not only client outcomes, but also the future direction of the firm.

We’re building something significant, and there is a clear path from Senior to Manager and beyond for professionals who consistently demonstrate technical excellence, leadership, judgment, and ownership.

We believe sustainable excellence is better than burnout. Busy seasons are real, but our goal is to build a firm where people can do exceptional work, continue developing professionally, and still have a life outside the office.

We operate in a high-trust environment, and high trust requires high accountability. We expect team members to communicate proactively, keep commitments, support one another, and take ownership of their work.

We are particularly interested in professionals who want to increase their leadership responsibilities over time and help shape the future of the firm.

What Success Looks Like

Within this role, success means:

  • Delivering technically strong work with minimal rework
  • Earning the trust of clients and teammates
  • Identifying opportunities that create value for clients
  • Improving systems, processes, and workflows
  • Taking ownership of problems instead of waiting for direction
  • Growing into a leader as the firm continues to scale
Success is measured not only by technical accuracy, but by judgment, ownership, communication, and the trust you build with clients and teammates.

Compensation & Benefits

Salary: $90,000 – $105,000 annually, based on experience

  • Health, dental, and vision insurance
  • 401(k) with employer contribution
  • Paid time off and paid holidays
  • CPA exam support and CPE reimbursement
  • Reasonable busy-season expectations with flexibility outside peak periods
  • Clear development path from Senior Accountant to Manager and beyond

How to Apply

Send your resume to careers@cookcpagroup.com, along with a short note (under 300 words) answering both of the following:

  1. Describe a tax planning opportunity, technical issue, or process improvement you identified and implemented. What was the situation, what did you recommend, and what was the outcome?
  2. What is one thing you believe great CPA firms do differently from average CPA firms?

We read every note. Candidates who skip these questions or submit generic responses won’t move forward.
