This is not a plug-and-play job. It’s an opportunity to step into a growing firm, take ownership, and help build something that’s getting better every month.

We’re a small, high-performing CPA firm focused on business owners and nonprofits. We care about doing great work, building real relationships with clients, and continuously improving how we operate.

If you want to grow, think, lead, and have a real impact, keep reading.

Why We Exist

Cook CPA Group has spent the last twenty years doing accounting the way we believe it should be done — built from scratch by founder Evelyn Cook, and grounded in real relationships with the people and organizations we serve.

At Cook CPA, we actually know our clients — not just their financials. We know what their kids are up to, where they’re traveling this summer, how their dog is doing, and what’s keeping them up at night. That’s not small talk. It’s how we do better work: when we understand what a client is worried about or where they’re trying to go, we can use what we know about tax and finance to open doors for them they wouldn’t have spotted on their own.

We also don’t judge. Clients come to us embarrassed about their books, worried about an IRS letter, or behind on things they meant to handle years ago. Our job isn’t to lecture them. It’s to figure it out alongside them and get it done. That ethic runs through everything we do.

We’d rather sit with a client over coffee than trade ten emails about something we could have sorted out in fifteen minutes. Our clients aren’t file numbers — they’re people the firm is genuinely invested in.

Why This Role Matters

As a Senior Tax Accountant here, your work directly drives that mission. You’ll identify tax strategies that put real dollars back in clients’ pockets, work directly with business owners who depend on your insight, and help shape how financials are structured, cleaned up, and understood.

If you’ve been at a larger firm where you rarely talk to clients, barely know the partners, and feel like a cog in a review chain — this is the opposite of that.

This role requires thinking, not just execution.

What You’ll Do

  • Prepare and review complex individual and business tax returns
  • Work directly with clients — answer questions, provide guidance, build trust
  • Identify tax planning opportunities, not just compliance work
  • Help clean up and improve messy books when needed
  • Contribute to improving internal processes and workflows
  • Support and mentor junior team members as we grow

What We’re Looking For

Baseline requirements

  • CPA license, or CPA candidate with at least one part of the exam passed
  • 4+ years of experience at a regional or national public accounting firm
  • Strong technical tax knowledge across individual and business returns
  • Ability to work in-office in Roseville

Beyond the baseline, we’re looking for someone who

  • Takes initiative and solves problems without waiting for direction
  • Is humble and treats clients without judgment, regardless of the situation
  • Thrives at a fast pace — comfortable with ambiguity, energized by variety, bored by monotony
  • Is organized and systematic — brings structure to work that needs it
  • Is firm and professional with clients — can hold the line on deadlines, documents, and expectations while keeping relationships strong
  • Is tech-savvy and curious — open to automation, AI, and tools that improve how we work
  • Has demonstrated leadership, formal or informal
  • Genuinely wants to help run and eventually own a firm

Why This Role Is Different

We’re intentionally small, and we’re not hiding it. That means you won’t get lost in bureaucracy, your ideas will actually matter, you’ll have direct exposure to clients and leadership. You’ll grow faster than you would in a larger firm. We’re small enough that you’ll know every client by name — and small enough that every client knows yours.

We don’t bill you out at 70 hours a week during busy season and call it culture. We’re building toward something bigger, and this role has a clear path from Senior to Manager and beyond.

What Success Looks Like

  • You own your work and follow through without reminders
  • Clients trust you and enjoy working with you
  • You actively look for ways to improve things, not just maintain them
  • You grow into a leader as the firm scales

If you need to be told what to do at every step, or prefer staying in a narrow lane, this won’t be the right fit.

Compensation & Benefits

Salary: $90,000 – $105,000 annually, based on experience

  • Health, dental, and vision insurance
  • 401(k) with employer contribution
  • Paid time off and paid holidays
  • CPE reimbursement and CPA exam support
  • Reasonable busy-season expectations with flexibility outside of peak periods
  • Clear path from Senior → Manager → beyond

How to Apply

Send your resume to careers@cookcpagroup.com, along with a short note (under 300 words) answering both of the following:

  1. Describe a specific tax planning opportunity or process improvement you’ve identified and implemented. What was the situation, what did you recommend, and what was the result?
  2. What’s one thing you think most CPA firms get wrong — about tax work, client service, or how they run their practice?

We read every note. Candidates who skip these questions or submit generic responses won’t move forward.

We don’t need the most experienced person. We need the right person — someone who takes ownership, thinks critically, and wants to help build something better.
